How to Remove AI Metadata from Photos
August 23, 2026
What you are actually removing
Source
Typical AI metadata
Upload risk
ChatGPT / DALL·E
OpenAI C2PA, sometimes XMP
AI Info on Meta apps
Adobe Firefly / Photoshop generative
C2PA + XMP
AI Info, client ZIP leaks
Midjourney
XMP generation parameters
Prompt leak, some label paths
ComfyUI / SD PNG
Text chunks (workflow JSON)
EXIF-only tools miss these
Phone AI editor
XMP or EXIF Software tag
Mixed - checker helps
EXIF GPS is a privacy problem, not always an AI-label problem. A vacation JPG with no C2PA can still get AI Info after a Lightroom AI Denoise export. Treat AI metadata and GPS as separate checks when needed.
Step-by-step workflow
- Export the publish master - the JPG/PNG you will attach in compose, not a RAW plus sidecar.
- Optional: run the metadata checker on one hero file. Note C2PA vs XMP vs PNG parameters chunks.
- Strip with the default full pass. Mixed carousels: profile one file per source (iPhone, Flux PNG, Canva export) before batching.
- Name the output Social_Ready or similar so the team does not re-upload an older manifest-heavy copy.
- Upload directly to Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, or Etsy - not through a messenger “test send.”
For checker → remover order and agency QA, see metadata checker before remover .
ChatGPT and DALL·E images
OpenAI stacks embed C2PA in many native downloads. Do not screenshot the chat - save the file.
- ChatGPT Image path: ChatGPT image metadata guide and /chatgpt-image
- DALL·E / Labs path: /dalle
Same strip workflow: export → optional check → remove → upload cleaned bytes.
Other common exports (short)
- Firefly / Photoshop generative fill - C2PA even on small edits; re-clean after every re-export.
- Midjourney - XMP-heavy; flatten to JPEG if clients must not see prompts.
- Canva / CapCut - can re-write metadata on export; clean the last raster before post.
Batch and limits
Up to 30 images per browser session. Carousels and ad sets need every slide cleaned - one contaminated frame can label the whole post.
Metadata stripping addresses file-level automated triggers. It does not replace platform disclosure rules or invisible pixel watermarks. See disclaimer .
When you are ready to clean the upload master, use the AI metadata remover - same engine as the homepage tool, with batch and platform FAQ on the dedicated page.
Remove AI metadata from photos before upload
Export, check, strip C2PA and XMP, upload cleaned master.
- Export the file you will publish - Save JPG or PNG from the AI tool or editor - not a screenshot or chat preview.
- Optional checker scan - Read-only scan for C2PA, XMP, and PNG chunks before you strip.
- Strip in the browser - Run the default full pass on the upload master; batch up to 30 images per session.
- Upload the download - Post Social_Ready - not an older copy from Downloads or WhatsApp.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is AI metadata in a photo?
Invisible blocks such as C2PA manifests, XMP prompts or Software tags, IPTC AI attribution, or PNG workflow chunks - not the visible image. Social apps read them for AI Info and Made with AI labels.
Does removing AI metadata change image quality?
No. Metadata sits in separate containers from pixel data. Resolution and colors stay the same after a browser strip.
Is EXIF-only removal enough for AI labels?
Usually not. ChatGPT, Firefly, and Photoshop generative exports often carry C2PA and XMP even when GPS EXIF is empty. Run a full pass for upload masters.
Can I remove ChatGPT metadata from an image?
Yes - export the PNG or JPEG from ChatGPT (not a screenshot), then strip OpenAI C2PA and related XMP in the browser before Instagram or Pinterest upload. Remove AI Label Team
