What Is EXIF Data and Why Remove It?
August 20, 2026
What is usually in the block
Not every file has every field. GPS appears only if location was on at capture. A serial number is less common than make and model, but it can still fingerprint a body across two accounts.
Typical contents:
- Coordinates for home, studio, or last night’s restaurant
- Camera or phone model
- Aperture, shutter, ISO, lens name
- Capture timestamp
- A Software tag after Lightroom or Photoshop export
Turning Location Services off stops new shots from getting a pin. It does not erase coordinates already written. HEIC and Live Photo stills can carry the same GPS after you export a JPEG.
Instagram is not your original
Platforms often strip EXIF on the copy they store after you tap Share. That does not help the file still sitting in Files, Google Drive, WeChat, or an Etsy attachment. Buyers and scrapers who download that JPEG can still read GPS.
WhatsApp “Document” and AirDrop tend to keep the original. “Media” compression is inconsistent - do not treat it as a cleaner. Marketplace listings and client proofs are the usual leak: you thought the social post was safe, and the ZIP you sent was not.
Dating apps and private chat are the same pattern. A compressed preview in the thread may look stripped; the camera-roll original you attached as a file is not. Serial numbers and lens IDs are smaller leaks than GPS, but they still tie two public accounts to one body if you post uncleaned masters everywhere.
Keep EXIF when the recipient needs shooting data (a magazine asking for aperture, a property shoot that must include GPS). Send that technical file separately, and run a full strip on the social still so Firefly credentials do not ride along. Do not use stripping to hide work you do not have rights to. Visible house numbers in the pixels are not EXIF; metadata tools will not blur them.
Clean the file that actually leaves
When the original is about to leave your machine, run the same browser cleaner as the C2PA and XMP pages - this article just leads with privacy. Open the EXIF cleaner , run the default full pass, download, and share that copy. Keep a private master if you still need camera fields.
A 20-image shop set should get one batch so every listing matches. Archive dirty masters privately.
Remove EXIF data from a photo
Strip GPS and camera fields from the file you will share, then send that copy.
- Pick the file that will leave your device - Use the JPEG or HEIC-derived still you will email, list, or upload - not a screenshot of it.
- Strip EXIF in the browser - The default pass strips EXIF together with C2PA and XMP. Keep a private master if you still need camera fields.
- Share the download - Post or attach that file. The master with EXIF can stay in a private folder.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is EXIF data?
EXIF is metadata cameras and phones write at capture - GPS, make and model, lens, exposure, and timestamps. Editors may add a Software tag later.
Why remove EXIF before sharing?
Originals sent by email, Drive, chat, or marketplace attachments still carry GPS and device fields. That is a privacy leak, separate from AI labels.
Does removing EXIF change quality?
The picture should look the same and resolution is not changed on purpose. The file is rewritten in the browser. It may be slightly smaller.
Can I strip AI tags and keep camera EXIF?
No layer toggle. The default pass strips C2PA, XMP, and EXIF. Keep a private master if you need aperture or GPS.
Is EXIF the same as C2PA?
No. EXIF is unsigned camera data. C2PA is a signed provenance manifest in a different part of the file. Remove AI Label Team
