What happens
Etsy listing upload
Original attachment can retain EXIF GPS
Instagram compose
Platform may strip their copy; your original in email or Drive may not
Client ZIP
Unclean masters expose studio or home location
WhatsApp / AirDrop forward
Re-sends the full file metadata
Instagram stripping metadata on their CDN does not protect the first file you email to a buyer or attach to a marketplace message.
Check before you strip
A full strip removes C2PA, XMP, and EXIF together on this site’s default pass - fine for social Social_Ready copies, but wrong if you still need camera fields on an archive master.
Workflow:
- Export the file you will publish.
- Run a read-only scan on the image privacy analyzer - GPS map and device fields without a server upload.
- If only location is the problem and you must keep other EXIF, note that the default remover is a full pass; keep a private master folder for catalog shots that need aperture or serial data.
- Upload the cleaned listing or post master.
Etsy sellers and product photos
POD and handmade listings often use phone photos shot at home. Turn off camera location for new shots, but existing inventory images still need a one-time clean before upload.
- Do not rely on Canva or marketplace “optimize” alone - re-export can add new XMP.
- Deliver client-facing JPEGs without GPS; keep RAW + full EXIF offline.
- AI mockups from Midjourney or Firefly are a different problem (C2PA/XMP) - privacy scan won’t replace an AI strip when labels are the issue.
Photographers: client delivery vs social
Wedding and portrait workflows:
- Archive master - keep GPS and full EXIF in private storage when you need it.
- Social / web / Etsy - strip location from copies that leave the studio.
- After Lightroom AI Denoise or generative fill - re-scan; AI edits can add C2PA even when GPS was the only worry yesterday.
For GPS-only background (not AI), remove GPS and location data covers phone settings and verification steps.
When to use the full metadata remover
If the publish file needs both privacy and AI prep - for example a Lightroom export with GPS and generative-fill C2PA - use one full pass on the metadata remover and keep a separate archive master.

Check GPS before Etsy or Instagram upload
Scan EXIF location, decide strip scope, publish cleaned listing or social master.
- Pick the file that will leave your device - Listing JPEG, client deliverable, or Instagram export - not a screenshot.
- Run a privacy scan - Read GPS and device fields in the browser without uploading to a server.
- Strip if needed - Remove GPS via full metadata pass when the publish copy should not reveal location.
- Upload the cleaned master - Attach Social_Ready to Etsy, Instagram, or email - keep a private archive with EXIF if required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can buyers see GPS data in my Etsy listing photo?
The original JPEG you upload can still carry EXIF GPS even when the listing preview looks normal. Strip location from the file you attach, not only from social copies.
Does Instagram remove GPS from my photo?
Instagram may strip metadata on the copy they serve, but originals sent by email, Drive, chat, or marketplace upload can still leak GPS from your master file.
How do I check GPS without stripping everything?
Use a read-only privacy scan that maps GPS from EXIF before you decide to remove location or run a full metadata pass.
Is GPS the same as AI metadata?
No. GPS lives in EXIF for privacy. C2PA and XMP drive AI Info labels. A studio shoot can have GPS with no AI tags; an AI export can have C2PA with no GPS. Remove AI Label Team
