What ChatGPT images adds to your images
OpenAI adds Content Credentials (C2PA) to images created with ChatGPT and its image models, including DALL-E. The credentials say the image was made by an OpenAI tool.
Markers and metadata
| Marker | What it is |
|---|---|
| Content Credentials (C2PA) | A signed manifest naming OpenAI as the tool that made the image. |
| Invisible watermark | OpenAI has not said it uses SynthID. SynthID is Google technology. |
Content Credentials are stored in metadata, so they can be lost when an image is screenshotted or re-saved by some apps. Platforms such as TikTok, LinkedIn and Instagram read them on upload.
Check a ChatGPT images file
Drop the file into the AI metadata checker to see its Content Credentials, IPTC tags, prompts and any private details. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
